Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born at Lynn in Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Lithuanian Jews Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. Her father, a carnival barker, died at the age of a tiny child, forcing her mother to provide for the family by working as a waitress and cleaning woman. Ruth was a student and grew up in poverty within Boston Massachusetts the tenement districts. After only two school years, Ruth left to pursue an acting profession. Her journey was not without obstacles. the path she chose to pursue. When she was in New York she was hired to take photos in a crime magazine, but no theatrical opportunities were offered. After that, she was a hat check girl at an evening club, before deciding to call her quits and relocating to Boston. She was an usherette in the mornings and was a part of the New England Repertory Company by night, which was her first acting position that was permanent. She also studied drama and later graduated from the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
